Catherine O’Leary is an Australian fibre artist who uses textiles as a medium to express her creativity. She has worked as a felt maker since 1990, using felt as a vehicle to create three dimensional forms.
These forms consist of wearable garments such as jackets, dresses, skirts and sculptures. Silk fabric and fine merino wool fiber are her preferred textiles. Sumptuous colours, shapes and textures rule her life and inspire her to create felt sculptures and felted garments.
Many of the fabrics are hand printed or painted to create unique designs consequently utilizing her arts and design training. There is a fascination with the sculptural aspects of clothing and how it curves around the body.
“In my current sculptures I am exploring the concept of creating layers of felt, having windows which reveal hidden spaces and shapes. These sculptures are often ephemeral and very light, many hanging and moving within the elements.”
Catherine is an experienced and very popular tutor in Australia and New Zealand as well as a highly respected artist.
